Ford dips their toe into Social Media

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

I was just passed a link to a great post about Ford using Social Media. It’s a great read, Scott Monty takes the time to point out some great strides Ford is making in many areas.

Maybe this is a sign that at least one of the 3 is going to take the web seriously?

Do people want to “make their own search”?

Friday, November 21st, 2008

A longtime client emailed us today looking for some insight on SearchWiki. Google is giving users a bit more control over their search results, if they are logged in of course.

Our client’s question was regarding the impact SearchWiki might have on SEO. A great question really.

While it’s a really cool feature, and could give Google even better insights on user behavior and preferences in the long run, I think it’ll be a while before we see the average user taking advantage of something like this.

Right now, Google is stating a user’s preferences won’t affect the results of other users, but we’d be crazy to think that if this has significant user adoption, Google wouldn’t incorporate data gathered into it’s ranking algorithm. So, it could have a long term impact.

If it does stick, it could be a really good thing for those of us who view web marketing from a holistic viewpoint because it’ll make the quality of a site that much more important. Giving users the ability to remove your site from search results really puts some emphasis on having a site that retains the visitor past the click.

10 things Fortune 500s Could do Easily

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

To improve their SEO efforts.

I’ve been making some pretty bold claims about large corps, especially the US automakers, regarding lack of SEO. So, rather than just making claims, I’m going to list, over the next couple weeks (hopefully) 10 things large companies often over-look in their sites. And I’ll back it up with examples.

Fortune 500s Missing SEO Opportunity

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Along the lines of my post the other day about US Automakers and SEO, it seems that most Fortune 500 companies are also missing the boat.

In our 10 years in the SEO business, we’ve worked with our share of Fortune 500s. It’s always bittersweet. They have so much potential, and so much up-side.

Yet, they ignore the potential of SEO so often:

Fortune 500s have so much CYA maneuvering that they can almost never get anything done. It’s easier to just spend hundreds of thousands on PPC so ‘upper management’ can see their brand on the top half of the page, than it is to take the time to actually fix their sites.
