A longtime client emailed us today looking for some insight on SearchWiki. Google is giving users a bit more control over their search results, if they are logged in of course.
Our client’s question was regarding the impact SearchWiki might have on SEO. A great question really.
While it’s a really cool feature, and could give Google even better insights on user behavior and preferences in the long run, I think it’ll be a while before we see the average user taking advantage of something like this.
Right now, Google is stating a user’s preferences won’t affect the results of other users, but we’d be crazy to think that if this has significant user adoption, Google wouldn’t incorporate data gathered into it’s ranking algorithm. So, it could have a long term impact.
If it does stick, it could be a really good thing for those of us who view web marketing from a holistic viewpoint because it’ll make the quality of a site that much more important. Giving users the ability to remove your site from search results really puts some emphasis on having a site that retains the visitor past the click.
