Chevrolet.com making some changes…

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

A few months back, I started giving some of the Fortune 500s, most especially the auto makers, a “blog beating”. Many of them were not utilizing some basic SEO strategies that could have helped improve sales. Looks like one of them, at least is starting to make some changes. Go check out some of the GM sites. Chevrolet.com has made several changes on the homepage.
*They now have page titles, for one.
*They’ve got some optimized internal linking going on, the navigation optimization is better, though there’s still room for improvement.
*There’s even a nice blurb of copy at the bottom of the page, optimized with a few keyphrases.

There is of course, more that can be done, but it is really nice to see the SEO efforts being made. Definitely a step in a positive direction. Still missing are meta tags, alt attributes, and more copy would be nice, among other things.

A quick perusal of some of the other GM sites yields similar thoughts (still lots of work to do).
*Saturn.com has a lot of work to do, as the homepage is almost entirely flash, with no copy at all, but at least they threw in some page titles and meta tags.
*Pontiac.com is much the same as Saturn, just some page titles and metas.
*GM Certified has no page titles, but does have some meta tags, the navigation has some optimization.
The GM sites are still leaving out some key SEO efforts, such as optimized copy, but the Chevy site is a nice start. I’m gonna keep tabs on them for a while, and let you know what other changes are made. It’s great to see the effort being made, though! Tax payer dollars at work?

The Economy – Garage Sales, Craig’s List, Tea partys

Monday, April 13th, 2009

I think I am starting to get pretty sick of hearing about the economy. If you pay attention, you’ll see that there are positive signs everywhere. Wrapping up March, and heading into April, TKG is having a pretty great couple of months. The stock market is stabilizing, to a certain extent. People here in Stark County have been on the rebound after bottoming out last year. I’m not saying that economic difficulties are over, but we need to look to the future. Unfortunately, the current administration seems to want to do nothing but cry over the doom and gloom. That, and spend tax payer dollars on every seemingly downtrodden industry in America. Even those who don’t want the help! Some of the banks that received some of the TARP money are trying to give it back. Several have just turned it down altogether, because of the crazy strings attached by the administration.

If you listen to mainstream media, or the administration, you’ll be convinced that we’ll never be able to pull ourselves out of this financial quagmire. It’s so bad, and everyone is headed for bankruptcy. Everyone you know is having a garage sale, or putting everything they own on Craigslist. Drastic times call for drastic measures, so we are now spending trillions of whose money? Tax payers? China’s? To try and stem the tide.

All of this spending is going to come at a great cost to us as a nation. We are losing control of the banking system, as Obama has promised Europe that they can control some of the banks that have been bailed out. Obama himself wants to be able to control banks and big business, as well as healthcare, as he is now controlling GM and Chrysler.

Let’s take a moment, folks, look around. If you live in this area, you’ll see that the parking lots of the restaurants are full. The mall is busy. You have to wait in line at Wal-Mart, for like, a zillion years, just like always. Yeah, you know some people, or are some people that are struggling financially. But can you really say that things are so bad that we want the government to just take over and handle it all? Do we really want a politician making our personal financial decisions for us? Do we really want politics to play a role in how we run our businesses? If you are a business owner, like me, with families who are depending on the success of this business, you don’t want a bunch of Washington beaurocrats running your business, most likely right into the ground. Or worse, running it with no intention of taking it in the direction you have foreseen since it’s inception. Using it for purposes you never intended. As the owner of a web development business, my sales guys know that there are certain “industries” we won’t do work for or with. The government might think that’s unfair, and try to force us to create sites or do other work that we are not comfortable with as a Christian company. I sure as heck won’t be allowed to identify my company as a Christian company anymore!

I think American is rebounding. I think we need to allow it to do so without so much governmental interference. We are going to end up a socialist nation in the very near future if we don’t stand up and fight what is happening – what I can hardly believe is happening here in America.

One way to make ourselves heard is by attending a Tea Party. Check it out, attend one in your area this Tuesday, April 15th.

Spoof Video for Free Web Hosting

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Our marketing department put together a video to spoof marketing tactics often employed by Auto Dealers and other similar organizations. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Check out the web hosting video here. Hopefully you’ll get a laugh out of it if nothing else.

Creating a Great Landing Page

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Your landing pages are a vital part of your overall online strategy. You have to keep in mind that not everyone enters your site on the homepage. Your landing pages need to speak to who you are as a company, quickly and concisely, and hopefully imparting your unique value proposition. If you are unfamiliar with what your unique selling proposition, or value proposition is, an article by Melissa Burton can give you some pointers.
A landing page is essentially any page that appears in the SERP for a search. Hopefully your page will reflect what has been searched for, and therefore, have something to offer the user.
Effective landing pages can be a key to your online success, if you do them properly. They should be clear, they should tell what your company or product are about, and they should sell your product. This sounds simple enough, until you realize that every page of your site has the potential to be a landing page. On the best sites, each page has a goal, or a topic (key phrases) that is specific to that particular page. You optimize for this topic, and your page is on it’s way to becoming a landing page for users who do a search related to the material on the page. This just reinforces what we’ve always said about great copy and well done on page efforts being the backbone of SEO. It comes full circle, when you get the idea that even your third tier page that you figure no one may ever see can be the page that draws a new customer to your site.
So, I’m sure this has you thinking you have a lot of work to do. What pages are the most important? What should you tackle first? Well, what product or service do you want folks to find out about the most? What drives your business? This should at least give you a jumping off point…
