A Class Act

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

I know this is off topic, even for this blog, but I had to give a shout out to college football teams Maryland Gamecocks and South Carolina. In honor of Veteran’s Day last week, both wore camouflage uniforms and in place of their names on the back were words like “commitment”, “courage”, “duty”, “honor’, “service”, and “country”.
The uniforms are going to be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to The Wounded Warrior Project, which aids wounded service members.
This was a great way to honor and remember our veterans, as well as active duty military. I think we all owe it to our service members to find ways to thank them whenever we can. I have walked up to guys just to shake thier hand, and they always appreciate it. So if you happen across a person in uniform, or a veteran, just take a second to say thanks, I am sure it will mean a lot to them.

This White House is All About Censorship

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

You’ve heard by now some of the stories surrounding comments made about Fox News by the White House. The President has said that the Fox News organization is nothing more than a “talk radio station”, implying that Fox News is too conservative for his taste. He later stated that he was not losing sleep over his administrations actions and views towards Fox.

The White House at one point was denying Fox News access to interviews with staffers. Only when other news organizations, fearing similar treatment should the White house not like some of their reporting, protested did the White House lift the ban.

When making the rounds of the Sunday talk shows, Obama famously and obviously skipped the Chris Wallace show on Fox.

Now, the White House is apparently using thinly veiled threats to keep Dems and their strategists off the network. The LA Times reported that a strategist that appeared on the Fox News network recently was contacted by the White House and told that they had better not see him on the network again. The caller insinuated that the strategist could suddenly lose clients if he persisted in appearing on Fox News.

You’d think that with 10.2% unemployment, a desperate need for troops in Afghanistan, and the current health care bill in Congress, the White House would have enough to do. Apparently not, as they have decided to become the bully on the playground. Or, as Chris Wallace aptly put it, “the biggest group of crybabies” ever.

We’ve got to make sure this guy never gets control of the web!

Facebook , a Tool for Good Traffic?

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Building brand loyalty should be at the top of the list for any business, and Facebook can be a way to help with that effort, for some anyways.

Chris Crum over at Web Pro News has a fantastic article out detailing how major companies have used Facebook to drive traffic to their sites. A combination of techniques used by these brands has created an environment where Facebook often refers more traffic than Google! Not surprisingly, Google is trying to get a piece of that action.

A few interesting aspects to this process:
1. Brand loyalty is what it’s all about. If you don’t have something going on, something to offer fans, i.e. consumers, (contests, games, free stuff) traffic will not translate into sales, and the efforts may just be a waste of time.
2. You have to promote your Facebook page. If consumers don’t know it’s there, it can’t do you any good, so you need to mention it in online and traditional advertising.
3. All of this is now able to be tracked so you use analytics to measure effectiveness.

Finding the best way to use social media to your advantage and to the advantage of your customers can be very beneficial and a good testing ground. Especially if you have not jumped into the mix yet, or perhaps your industry does not lend itself to web marketing as easily as some others. Facebook is currently a free service, so your time and reputation are the biggest risk factors. Assuming it’s a fit, and you have the time and commitment to do it right, it can be a real help.

Social Media is about to become a feeding frenzy!

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Okay, so much going on with social media right now, it’s turning into a feeding frenzy!
Google, Facebook and Twitter have just signed a SWEET new deal with Bing/Microsoft. Facebook and Twitter will be integrating real-time status updates and feeds into Bing. Bing is new, and not on the top of the Search pile yet, but offering this service could very well bring new users. It will be interesting to see how Bing decides relevancy and rankings for status updates, blog posts and tweets. Pretty cool, though, you put up a new blog post, tweet it and it gets retweeted, you can end up in Bing’s search results.

So, you have a breaking news story, you blog about it, or tweet it, and your tweets could rank quite well on Bing for that event. Big news events have been tweeted before, and the tweets have been a major source of information. February I blogged about a guy using Twitter to inform the world of that plane crash in New York. This was a breaking news story, the folks at Fox News happened to see this guys’ tweets and contacted him for the story. This will potentially happen in real time, bringing the power of the web that much higher. Pretty cool, and it could mean some nice traffic and rankings for bloggers with a good following.

Google, not to be left out in the cold signed a similar deal with Twitter and will be including Tweets in search engine results.
