About the author:
I’ve been blessed in a lot of ways. I have a wonderful wife (Amy) and 5 great kids (Mary, Tommy, Sammy, Julia and Annie) that give me lots of motivation. My wife and I both belong to big Catholic families, with lots of children. So, these are the things that motivate me and give me my direction.
A lot of people assume, because I own a Web Development/Search Marketing business, that I grew up with computers and that they consumed the majority of my childhood. In reality, that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, I had been working in the Web Development business for about 3 years before I knew how to copy a file from my hard drive to a floppy. I was just given an opportunity early (at age 19), by my Dad, to sell “Computer Advertising” for a startup that his company was launching. They were a startup, with few resources and needed a cheap sales person. That was me. This was back in ‘94. That business grew over the next 2 years into a Web Development business, and has since evolved into an online industry hub for the plastics industry (www.polysort.com).
My primary interest was, and has always been, in Sales. I like people. The web business just gave me an exciting venue to do what I like, with a great challenge. As I mentioned, I had an early start and some great opportunities at 19 years old. Since then I’ve worked either with or for many organizations, some ISP’s that took a crack at web development, Thomas Register, Ad Agencies and a few others. These opportunities have exposed me to a lot. I’ve had the chance to learn about technology, advertising, marketing, sales all contributing to how I try to apply what the web has to offer to just about any business or organization.
So, in short, I’m not a programmer, I’m not a designer, there are plenty of people far more talented than me to do those things. What I do best is spend time with people either absorbing what they can teach me, or helping them leverage the web to make their business better, usually a little of each.
About the blog:
This began as a web and small business centered blog. As our world and the financial environment began to change in the last two years, I felt compelled to write about topics that affect my business and my family. This often involves politics, current events and the direction our country is going. I feel that all of these things will influence not only business and finance, but will have direct implications for the web as well.
The FCC, FTC, taxes and new regulations are more and more changing the way we do business, both on the Web and off. Social media, blogging in particular, is one way to make our voices heard, not only by our leaders. Blogging is becoming a way to unite people, and engage them in efforts to preserve our country and our freedoms. I will be utilizing this blog not only to discuss observations and ideas about the web industry, but also as a place to comment on the political happenings in our country. Still, trying to make a little “sense” out of it all…
