Chevrolet.com making some changes…

April 14th, 2009

A few months back, I started giving some of the Fortune 500s, most especially the auto makers, a “blog beating”. Many of them were not utilizing some basic SEO strategies that could have helped improve sales. Looks like one of them, at least is starting to make some changes. Go check out some of the GM sites. Chevrolet.com has made several changes on the homepage.
*They now have page titles, for one.
*They’ve got some optimized internal linking going on, the navigation optimization is better, though there’s still room for improvement.
*There’s even a nice blurb of copy at the bottom of the page, optimized with a few keyphrases.

There is of course, more that can be done, but it is really nice to see the SEO efforts being made. Definitely a step in a positive direction. Still missing are meta tags, alt attributes, and more copy would be nice, among other things.

A quick perusal of some of the other GM sites yields similar thoughts (still lots of work to do).
*Saturn.com has a lot of work to do, as the homepage is almost entirely flash, with no copy at all, but at least they threw in some page titles and meta tags.
*Pontiac.com is much the same as Saturn, just some page titles and metas.
*GM Certified has no page titles, but does have some meta tags, the navigation has some optimization.
The GM sites are still leaving out some key SEO efforts, such as optimized copy, but the Chevy site is a nice start. I’m gonna keep tabs on them for a while, and let you know what other changes are made. It’s great to see the effort being made, though! Tax payer dollars at work?
