Google Chrome: Who will use it?
September 4th, 2008
So, I installed Chrome and have used it for a couple of days now. It’s nice. Quick, clean and easy to use. However, I’ll shortly return to Firefox because it makes the tools I need easier to use and customize. So far, the user doesn’t have much control over the interface of Chrome. Granted, it’s still in beta.
The web developers I work with are excited about because of it’s tendency towards web standards and some new development and testing capabilities it’ll offer them.
But, to the average user, someone who casually uses the web: I don’t see anything here that’ll cause them to change from IE or Firefox. Sure, it’s a bit cleaner interface, but only a bit. Sure, it renders pages faster, but lets be honest, there are still people on DSL and dial up! Do we really think they’re going to change browsers to gain a millisecond faster load time?
In my opinion, its another new browser out there, but I don’t think its going to change how we use the web.
Power users and developers will use it and enjoy it, but I wonder of the marketing that Microsoft is doing regarding IE 8 and privacy will catch on. It seems to me that, whether that is just marketing or it’s a reality, privacy is something the average user is concerned about and will change browsers for.
Incidentally, I haven’t used IE for years.
