So, this Footer Link Issue is Fun
October 30th, 2009
It got Nate Klaiber’s attention so he wrote an entertaining blog post here.
I love debate!
So…
I would encourage everyone to read it, after checking out these sites where some of Nate’s work has similar footer “stamps” on their work. You’ll see “Reflect Your Site” and “Powered by Reflect CMS”, ironically even as a distraction on Nate’s own blog and websites. Mind you reflect is a CMS that Nate described as “his baby”, while interviewing for a job at TKG about a year ago.

So, is this a closely held belief?
Please also keep in mind that this is no reflection (pardon the pun) on Clear Function, the current developers of Reflect. They appear to do really nice work.

Again, I look forward to a response that actually addresses the inconsistencies and fallacies in your reasoning. This post isn’t debate about the subject matter at hand, it’s yet another attempt at mudslinging. I encourage you to discuss the issue at hand. With that being said:
1. My personal website. I was the core developer of Reflect CMS. I used it while developing the tool as a sort of “eating my own dog food”. I have direct relationships with both. It’s my personal site, and it’s my project. There are no clients involved in here at all. In fact, the link to Reflect is completely contextual – I was the developer, and I am using the tool.
2. My review site. As I responded earlier, this was a direct understanding with Aaron Boeving who designed the site. In exchange for him designing the site, I added links to my footer making note of it. Again, there are no clients involved here it all. It’s my personal site, and it’s my project. Also, those links are relevant to both the subject matter at hand (Web Development Book Reviews) – and how I put that in practice with my work at Clear Function, Reflect, and Pulse. All of these are within context.
3. smerickson.com. Steve Erickson is a valued Reflect user. He got in early with the private beta and gave us great amount of feedback and insight. He personally chose to have that on his site, it is not forced on him. Shall I link up a handful of other sites on Reflect that have no link at all? Didn’t you find that with your top notch investigating skills?
None of these directly correlate to stamping a client’s site. They are my sites, and all projects I work on.
I appreciate your investigative skills, but can we get back to the issue at hand? Can you actually address the questions I posed to you? I am still interested in hearing about your 24/7 support system justification, specifically.

Nate, I posted comments on your blog a while ago, but you are apparently blocking them from your readers.

Regarding your comments. Whatever your justification is, you are employing the same practice. Your case is it’s distracting from the message. If you really believe that, its distracting no matter how justified you feel.
If you’re creating controversy for the sake of controversy, then it makes some sense.
